Does evil explain the grisly Manitoba Greyhound beheading of Tim McLean?

The daily litany of human savagery defies comprehension - women and children hacked to pieces; babies sliced out of wombs; young girls kidnapped, raped and buried alive; innocent civilians blown up at markets; political prisoners brutally tortured and murdered; daughters slaughtered by their parents in the name of "honor." How can we explain such gruesome, depraved acts? And how can we explain the perpetrators' lack of remorse?

This video is an eyewitness account of Vince Weiguang Li's horrific stabbing and beheading of Tim McLean, a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus to Winnipeg:

What posseses someone to carry out such a heinous act?

Jonathan Pincus, a neurologist and author of Base Instincts: What Makes Killers Kill? concludes that "it is the interaction of childhood abuse with neurologic disturbances and psychiatric illnesses that explains murder." Helen Morrison has studied the brains of serial killers for decades and offers this: ""What makes a serial killer? After all these years, I still don't know," she says in a cool, soothing voice. "We try to give them motives, but they don't have any. They just do it."

Do these acts - and all the murder, torture, mayhem, and cruelty that stain human history - prove the existence of evil?

"PLEASE KILL ME" - "The man accused in the beheading of a passenger last week on a Greyhound bus asked in court Tuesday to be killed. Observers in a packed Portage la Prairie, Man., courtroom gasped as some of the details of Vincent Li's alleged crimes were read aloud. Li showed no visible reaction before quickly and quietly speaking for the first time. "Please kill me," he said."

CANNIBALIZATION - "A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police report."

He should get death by lethal injection.

I can't believe someone could do that brutal crime... Inside a public transportation. With the full view of children and women... That is outright evil... Or maybe he is crazy...

RIP Timothy Richard McLean.

This guy needs to have the same done to him or worse. Compassion should goto the compassionate and hell on earth should (i.e. he should get hacked to death)open to those who commit such crimes against humanity.

This is an outrage. I am so sad for the family of Tim McLean. I have a brother around the same age and if I knew it was him, I would not know what to do. Li should be sentenced to death right away with no psychological assessment. I dont think it takes a psychological test to determine hes crazy. I send my condolences to the McLeans. I think Canada should start doing something about the immigration rules in this Country we call Land of the free. I know it could of been anyone commmiting this discusting crime, However, enough is enough. Send him back where he came from.

Send these folks back where they cam from...

Dream on my friend. Long as we have these stupid laws pandering to the aggressor rather than fighting for victims rights, the sink will only get deeper.

That vicious man did not give Tim a chance. Now he will make full use of tax payers dollars to get a place to sleep, full meals, TV and daily exercise.

Sanity has its limits.

It's the other way around. Evil does not explain this, such incidents show what evil *is*.

Not a persona, a force or a spirit. Evil is simply something that ... intrudes... upon caring humanity from the raw random creative chaos of underlying nature.

Yes, this demon was pure evil. He obviously planned on killing someone, anyone on that bus. He chose Tim McLean because of his size, but truly that didn't matter. No one could have survived that attack. There is no way to fight back when you are sleeping. He is a coward, loser, killer. I pray no one offers up forgiveness to this demon. Forgiveness should only be given when true repentance is shown. Even God does not forgive the un-repentant. However, I do believe that God is just, and He will serve the final sentence on the killer. I pray for Tim & his family and friends. I can't imagine what Tim experienced in his last moments and the pain his loved ones will carry.

Does evil exist? All one has to do is take a look at the horror Tim McLean was subject to. Was Tim in the "Wrong place at the wrong time"? No! I can't stand that phrase. Why is it that the wretched scum should dictate where & when? Tim was doing nothing wrong, not in place or time.

The killer asked the Judge to kill him. I would like to see that request granted and send him to the Ultimate Judge.

God Bless Tim McLean!!

It must suck to be Vincent Li. He sounds pretty sane if he is asking to be put to death. Clearly he has a clue that what he did is heinous.

While the stigma of mental illness dominates,we all continue to turn a blind eye...pretending it was evil, the devil, a sign from god to punish us all...

I find it very hard to believe there were no warning signs that the perpetrator was having difficulty coping with reality. We are all responsible for nurturning our race. The human race. We can blame, hate, point fingers all we want...but how will that help? Do we not owe it to this young victim, the will to collectively problem solve. As a society we have accepted treatment programs for alcoholics, gamblers, etc...why are we so reluctant to truly help the mentally ill?

Those that criticize immigration laws are assuming one has a choice in mental illness. It hits all races, classes, ages, genders and sextual orientations. Pretending there is no crisis is pretending it isn't your problem.

My heart goes out to all families devestated by this horrific event.
